Six diaries that Harvey Henderson kept during his Civil War service covering the following periods: 1) 1861, Oct. 5 - 1862, Apr. 30; 2) 1862, May 1 - 1862, Dec. 31; 3) 1863, Jan. 1 - Nov. 30: 4) 1863, Dec. 1 - 1864, May 18; 5) 1864, May 19 - June 30; and 6) 1864, July 1 - 1865, Apr. 2. The entries describe the regiment's organization in Elmira, N.Y.; the defenses of Washington, D. C. expedition to Hatteras Inlet, N. C. and duty at Hatteras Inlet and Roanoke Island, including the battle of Camden, South Mills, N.C. (1862, Apr. 19); duty at New Berne, S.C. and Newport News, Aquia Creek and Fredericksburg, Va.; Maryland Campaign, including the battles of South Mountain (1862, Sept. 14) and Antietam (1862, Sept. 16 - 17); duty in Pleasant Valley (Sept. 18 - Oct. 27); review of the 9th Army Corps by Abraham Lincoln (Oct. 3); movement to Falmouth, Va. (Oct. 27 - Nov. 19); battle of Fredericksburg, Va. (1862, Dec. 12 -15); "Mud March" (1863, Jan. 20 -24); siege of Suffolk; Dix's Peninsula Campaign; siege operations against Forts Wagner and Gregg, Morris Island, S.C., Fort Sumter and Charleston; including the bombardment of Fort Sumter (1863, Aug. 17-23) and capture of Forts Wagner and Gregg (Sept. 7); operations against Charleston and duty on Morris and Folly Islands, S.C. Harvey Henderson was born Dec. 2, 1841, near Walton, N.Y., son of John Henderson (18001-1886) and Nancy Bailey Henderson (1803-1868). In September 1861, he enlisted in F.L. England's company raised in Delaware County, N.Y. to join James Dickinson's Guard. The unit was later designated Company I of the 89th Regiment of New York Infantry. With his regiment, he fought in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Maryland, taking part in in the in the defenses of Washington, D. C. (1861, Dec. 6 - 1862, Jan. 2); ...
